A young woman, believed to be about 19 years old, cut the neck of her one-day-old baby and dumped the body at a cocoa farm in Atenrom, a village near Akyem Etwereso in the Eastern Region.

The suspect, whose name was given as Patience, better known as Mummie, delivered the baby at dawn last Friday but claimed that some parts looked like an animal.

The suspect, according to a witness, Nana Owusu, took the baby to a nearby bush and cut his throat with a kitchen knife.

Owusu said Patience, who already has a five-year-old son, is believed to be suffering from depression.

According to him, the teenager left the city to stay in Accra, where she became pregnant, and recently returned to her town in Akyemansa District.

The teenager, according to the witness, refused to disclose the baby’s whereabouts after several requests from her uncle and village elders.

Her refusal forced the young people of the community to undertake a search and after several hours the baby’s lifeless body, wrapped in a sack, was found on a cocoa farm.

Meanwhile, the suspect was arrested by Akyem Ofoase District Police to assist in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the baby’s body has been deposited in the morgue of Oda Government Hospital.
