The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) says 173 inmates will participate in the upcoming National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams, scheduled to take place from 21 October to 27 November 2024.

This marks a significant step in the rehabilitation and educational development of inmates across 18 correctional facilities.

Spokesperson for the department, Singabakho Nxumalo, expressed confidence in the readiness of inmate matriculants.

“The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is pleased with the level of preparedness, as inmates have completed the academic syllabus on time and have undergone various assessments throughout the year.

“Educators from the department’s 18 schools remain optimistic, having made significant efforts to ensure that all candidates are thoroughly prepared.

“Additionally, the department ensured that all required textbooks and stationery were delivered to schools in a timely manner,”  said Nxumalo.

National Commissioner Mr. Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale praised the efforts of educators, saying: “Education not only empowers offenders with knowledge but also offers them a path to a new life.”

He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to providing educational opportunities as a vital part of inmate rehabilitation.

In 2023, the DCS achieved a 93% pass rate, with several schools achieving 100% pass rates, often exceeding national results.
