Six suspects aged between 24 and 51 were arrested on Tuesday, May 28, and in the early hours of today, May 29, 2024, between 23:00 and 03:00 in the village of Mavundleni, Qhingqolo A/A.
They are accused of violating the electoral law.
The arrests stem from an incident on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at around 16:00, when a polling station set up as a tent was vandalized by people protesting against the provision of services in the area.
Proceedings were then initiated and on Monday, May 27, 2024, the same group threatened IEC officials and insisted that the polling station be closed to prevent voting.
On Tuesday, May 28, 2024, the group further escalated their actions by blocking roads, burning tires and preventing any movement in the area.
The OR Tambo District Electoral Campaign Team, with the support of members of the Public Order Police, conducted an operation on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, which led to the arrest of the six suspects.
They are currently being held at Mqanduli Police Station and are scheduled to appear before the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court on Friday, June 01, 2024.
