Sharpeville crisis meeting results

BOIPATONG.- The regional leadership of the ANC is alleged to have convened an urgent meeting in response to the looting crisis in Sharpeville that also spread to Tshepiso and Boipatong last week.

The ward councillors from wards 3, 8, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 22 attended the meeting. Also in attendance, were the police station commanders of Sharpeville and Boipatong, their Community Policing Forums (CPFs), and representatives from Sedibeng Community Safety.

Dr Bandile Masuku, chairperson of the Community Safety Portfolio Committee, was also part of the meeting.

The following resolutions were said to have been made:

  1. All shops owned by foreign nationals in Boitshepiville are to be closed and police are to communicate this decision.
  2. The CPF will inform landlords of the decision to close foreign-owned shops and they will be engaged in finding long-term solutions.
  3. Police and immigration officers to arrest and deport illegal foreign nationals.
  4. The provincial government will be invited to present support options for locally-owned shops.
  5. Emfuleni Local Municipality will be engaged in the enforcement of by-laws.
  6. A follow-up meeting to review the implementation of these resolutions and to develop long-term solutions will take place today, October 21.

Meanwhile, MEC Lebogang Maile is visiting Sharpeville to engage with the community and families affected by the recent violence and looting of spaza shops.
