Well-known billionaire Bill Gates has made a clear statement on Nigeria’s purchase of COVID-19 vaccines.

According to him, the Federal Government of Nigeria should try to fix the health sector instead of buying COVID-19 vaccines.

His comments come after the federal government indicated that it will buy these expensive vaccines that are now available instead of waiting for the cheaper ones from GAVI.

In his statement, he said;

“The key is that Nigeria is still eligible (for GAVI Vaccinee), and so a lot of these vaccines will come through the GAVI facility that we raised money for.

I am advocating for the government to provide more funding and prioritize health. Obviously, I am not a constituent in Nigeria, so Nigeria can decide that independently.

So my advice is that the primary health care system is super important, and with these finite resources, you have to prioritize spending. And in this case, the best thing to do would be to wait for the GAVI vaccines.”
