One Direction star Liam Payne has died after falling from the third floor of a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires
Police say they were called to the hotel after reports of an “aggressive man who may have been under the effects of drugs and alcohol”
Payne fell from the balcony after officers arrived, the statement adds
Fans have been gathering outside the hotel to mourn the 31-year-old’s death – lighting candles, singing One Direction songs and holding moments of silence
Payne, from Wolverhampton in the UK, rose to global fame when One Direction were formed on the X Factor in 2010
They became the biggest boy band in the world, before going on hiatus in 2016. Payne released his only solo album in 2019
In posts to social media platform Snapchat in the days before his death, Liam Payne talked about riding horses, playing polo and watching his former bandmate Niall Horan perform live in Buenos Aires.
Videos he shared from the concert on 2 October show him dancing with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy, waving to fans in the crowds, and singing along to One Direction’s old hits.
He posted a selfie with Horan, and spoke about how proud he was of the Slow Hands singer.
Hours before his death Payne posted on Snapchat saying: “It’s a lovely day here in Argentina.”
