Two children, Suraiya, 7, and Habib, 9, burned to death after a mysterious fire destroyed a house in Anguwar Dawaki in Suleja, Niger State.

It was reported that the father of the two children, Alhassan Jibirin Yanji, who suffered burns of varying degrees while trying to save the children, is still being treated at a hospital in Suleja.

A local resident, Bashir Ibrahim, who spoke to Daily Trust, said the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 2, around 3am.

He said the two children were asleep in their room while their father was sleeping in his bedroom when he woke up to find that the entire house was filled with thick smoke.

“Strangely, at the time of the fire, there was no electricity in the entire Dawaki area, so the cause of the fire is not yet known,” said the resident, adding that no valuables were taken from the house and the victims’ mother was not at home.

The mayor of Suleja, Alhaji Abdullahi Maje, who confirmed the fire incident, said that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the inferno.

Meanwhile, the remains of the two children were buried according to Islamic rites on Friday morning.
